| Korte omschrijving: | Would you like to explore and participate in the dynamic and daily-changing fields of International Journalism? Interview a family of political asylum-seekers facing deportation from the Netherlands? Mingle with ministers on a field trip to Brussels or London*? Make a webcast about the growing power of Bollywood on the worldwide entertainment scene? These are the kinds of things you'll be doing in the minor ‘International Journalism: Global and Local'. This minor will help you develop a solid base in the knowledge, research and practical skills required for today's journalism. And these skills will be put to use on a variety of media platforms. In the classroom, you'll work on your English writing skills (news articles and essays), as well as interviewing in English. You'll analyze the techniques and influence of CNN, Fox, Al Jazeera, the BBC and you'll be trying to understand today's conflicts; how they are represented and mis-represented on the many stages of world-wide media. Subjects can range from politics to society to culture, urban-planning, economics, media and more. This minor aims to connect the global to the local, and the local to the global, and find dynamic forms for the practice of 21st century journalism. All participants (apart from native speakers of English) attend classes which will help develop English-language abilities. Are you a media junkie? Do you have opinions about what is going on around you? If this is you, then you might have a place in the minor International Journalism: Global and Local. * Destinations of field trips can differ per semester Outline of the minor: All sub courses are graded individually. Only Project IM/PRESS is group work but even this work will result in individual grades as we use a peer assessment procedure to grade individual performances within the group work. Re sits are possible at least once every school year. Project IM/PRESS is group work but in case of individual scores below 5.5, an individual re sit of this course is possible. |

| Toegankelijk voor: | Open to all students, both from HvA and other universities in the Netherlands and abroad. Students from outside HvA apply via www.kiesopmaat.nl (enrollment is only possible within a specified term, see the website). Foreign students apply via the International Office, contact a.m.n.goegebuer@hva.nl and b.leeh@hva.nl. |
| Voorwaarden toelating: | A minimum of 20 students is required to run the minor (max. 32). Be aware that the HvA-portal will close as soon as 25 students from HvA have signed in, as we will reserve places for foreign students. Only students that take part in the selection procedure will be admitted. That means that merely enrolling in the minor via the HvA-portal (SIS) is not enough. Conditions: 1. you have to have all ECTS of the first year of your study (propedeuse); 2. you have obtained at least 40 ECTS in the major of your study (that is ECTS of year 2, 3 and/or 4); 3. you have to write a short news article in English (max. 400 words). You are free to choose a genre. Choose a news photo or illustration and write a caption. Mail this (addresses below) together with your curriculum vitae and a recent list of grades as proof that you meet the ECTS-requirements. All files have to be put in one Word document. The deadline for letters of HvA students is always 7 days before the so called ‘minorenmarkt’. We will select 20 students of the HvA. They will receive an answer from us 2 days before the minorenmarkt, in this case students who may not attend can orientate for another minor on this market. Students via Kies op Maat send their article, CV and grades list before the end of their enrollment term (this term is published on www.kiesopmaat.nl, search for International Journalism). Foreign students have to send in their work and CVs as soon as they have had contact with the international office, see below. Both foreign and Kies op Maat-students will receive more information on their admission within 2 weeks after the end of the enrollment term as stated on www.kiesopmaat.nl. All students (HvA, Kies op Maat and foreign students) send their work to m.a.geboers@hva.nl and r.kroon@hva.nl). IF YOU READ THIS AFTER THE ABOVEMENTIONED HVA DEADLINE, THERE MIGHT STILL BE A POSSIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE - SO IF YOU ARE INTERESTED BUT YOU ARE TOO LATE, THERE MIGHT STILL BE SEATS AVAILABLE, MAIL THE COORDINATORS MARLOES GEBOERS AND RONALD KROON. |
